Custer, 77, 51 South Whitehall Road, Norristown, and 185 Main St., Hooversville, died April 26, 1987, at Somerset Community Hospital. Born Sept. 4, 1909, in Hooversville, son of John E. and Sara (Snyder) Custer. Preceded in death by parents; his wife, the former Bernice Shank; and brother, Snyder E. Survived by son, John E. Custer, married to the former Cindy Airhart, Seattle, Wash. Brother of: Mrs. Mary Ileene Anderson, widow of E.L. "Swede" Anderson, Somerset; and Mrs. Ronald (Iris) Coleman, Hooversville. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hooversville. Graduate of Somerset High School, Lafayette College and Columbia University, where he received his master's degree. He also did graduate work at Temple University. He is retired from Norristown Area School District as assistant superintendent director of personnel. He was well known in Somerset and Cambria County baseball circles in the 1920's and 30's, he played college baseball at Lafayette, and he just completed 41 years as director of Times-Herald Baseball School of Norristown. World War II Army veteran, member of the American Legion, Norristown, and the Norristown Exchange Club. Family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Hooversville. Remains will be moved to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hooversville, for viewing from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Gerald L. Myers officiating.
