Born March 27, 1932, in Somerset Township, he was the third child of the late Fred S. Darr Sr. and Gladys (Knepper) Darr. He is survived by his wife, Lois Rae (Rush) Darr, whom he married on October 10, 1953. He is also survived by his children, Allan and wife, Laura (Diebler), State College; Mark and wife, Brandi (Cassidy), Acme; Sue, Somerset; Scott and wife, Sue (Augustine), Geiger; Doug and wife, Kim (Brant), Somerset; and Ron and wife, Missy (Dickey), Somerset; 15 grandchildren; sisters, Lois and husband, Don Lowry, Mechanicsburg; Phyllis and husband, Robert Musser, Shanksville; and Barbara and husband, Dan Manges, Confluence; and brothers, Wayne and wife, Ann Darr, Berlin; and Robert and wife, Mary Eileen Darr, Stoystown. He is a 1950 graduate of Somerset High School where he was a Future Farmer of America and was the State Farm Tractor Driving Champion for that year. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served from 1954 to 1956. He was retired from the Rural Electric Co-operative where he worked from 1960 to 1995 as chief lineman. He also worked for Fike Contracting, farmed and was a carpenter and electrician. He was a member of the Somerset Church of the Brethren where he was active in many capacities including being a church board member and youth activities director. He enjoyed hunting, camping, long drives in the countryside and his grandchildren's activities. Fred and Lois especially enjoyed helping family and friends in many ways. Fred's handyman skills were in constant use with family and community projects. He also built several homes for friends in the area. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Somerset Church of the Brethren. Mark Bendes, pastor, officiating, with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Interment at Somerset County Memorial Park.
