James Daugherty, aged 72, lived alone and operated a small farm. He was in the habit of reading two newspapers regularly, and when he had not taken them from the mail box late Friday evening it aroused the suspicions of John Miller and other neighbors that something might be wrong with the old man. When their knock at the door brought no response they peered through the kitchen window and discovered Daugherty's body on a couch. Upon investigation by Coroner F. E. Sass of Boswell, it was found that Mr. Daugherty had died of coronary occlusion about 24 hours before his dead body was discovered. The horse, cow and chickens in the barn showed no signs of hunger and it is believed all were well fed the day previous. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Glencoe Evangelical Church. Interment was made in the Mt. Lebanon cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Son, Berlin morticians. Mr. Daugherty lived on what was known as the old Crosby farm for the past thirty years. He was of a quiet, kindly disposition and spent much of his time roaming about the wood, and during the winter months did considerable trapping. Friends and neighbors have no knowledge of any near relatives, with the exception of a half-brother, whose whereabouts were not known early this week. Meyersdale Republican, January 9, 1941
