"Shorty" Derencin, 88, of Somerset, died Nov. 23, 2003 at Somerset Hospital. Born Feb. 25, 1915 in Connellsville, he is the son of the late Marijan and Amelia (Arthur) Derencin. Also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Marie (O'Hara) Derencin and a brother Marijan Derencin Jr. Survived by daughters, Mrs. Donald R. (Arleen) Hetzer of Ocala, Fla. And Mrs. Ross (Rita) Gary of Somerset; grandchildren: Charles Landis, Christine Herrington, Brian and Adam Hetzer, Renee Casey, Rebecca Baker and Ryan Gary; great-grandchildren: Danielle, Dexter and Barry Landis, Erica and Cory and Victoria and Allison Baker. Brother of Fred Derencin and wife Daisy of Friedens, Clifford Derencin and wife Genieva of Somerset, Dorothy Newbury of Alma, Mich., Florence Welch of Montana and Virginia Miller of Somerset. Member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and American Legion. Lifetime member of the VFW. World War II Army veteran with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Received the Bronze and Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Owner and operator of Derencin Auto Repair for over 50 years. A 1932 graduate of Somerset High School. Friends received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in St. Peter's Catholic Church with Monsignor Samuel J. Tomaselli celebrant. Committal in Somerset County Memorial Park. Wake service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
