DeWitt, a resident of Scottdale, Pa., passed away Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 7, at Cleveland, O., after an illness of eighteen months duration. He was born at Hoyes, Md., August 21, 1865, the son of Archibald and Ellen (Chambers) DeWitt. In his young manhood he learned telegraphy at the East End Sand Patch Tunnel, where he was well known by the older people of that vicinity. He was later employed by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company as an operator. Mr. DeWitt moved to Scottdale in 1893 and served as operator and agent for the B. & O. at Everson. Later he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. in the same capacity for a short period of time. Early in 1900 he opened a Real Estate and an Insurance business. This he conducted successfully until his retirement two years ago. Mr. DeWitt was married to Amy Elizabeth Lepley, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John H. Lepley of Meyersdale. Mrs. DeWitt and the following children survive: Dr. Clyde C. DeWitt of Michigan State College, East Lansing; Mrs. Albert L. Wyke, Cleveland, O. He is also survived by five grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon in the Murphy Funeral Home by the Rev. J. C. Doudna of the Methodist Church of which Mr. DeWitt was a faithful member. Interment was made in the Scottdale Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, December 16, 1948
