Born August 10, 1906, in Asheville, N.C., son of the late Richard Gunton and Flora Belle (Swears) DeWitt. Also preceded in death by wife, the former Luella Jane Snider, who died on May 5, 1992, and brother, Jack DeWitt. Survived by brother, Charles DeWitt, Deland, Fla. Also friend and caregiver, Peggy Egolf of Somerset, and a number of nieces and nephews. Retired from the J.J. Newberry Co. in Jan. 1975. Mr. DeWitt managed stores in Cortland, N.Y.; Columbus, Ohio; Fremont, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; West Franklin, Ill.; Brunswick, Md.; Elmira, N.Y.; Freehold, N.J.; Ironton, Ohio; Coatesville, Pa.; Sayre, Pa., and Somerset. Worked for forty-seven years with the Newberry Co. Was given the highest award given to an adult by the National Boy Scouts, the Silver Beaver Award. He served as District Boy Scout Commissioner and chairman of district advancement committee of Admiral Robert Peary Council 1946-1948. Was an Eagle Scout with three palms: brass, silver and gold. Belonged to the Order of the Arrow in the Boy Scouts. Was a Scoutmaster in Johnstown, N.Y.; N.Y. Member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, thirty-second degree Mason of Pittsburgh, former member, Uniontown Commandery #49, Council of Royal and Select Masters, Knights Templar. Former member of Tail Cedars of Lebanon #77, Greensburg, and Grand Council Order of the DeMolay #16, Gloversville, N.Y. Attended Staunton Loomis Military School, Cornwall, N.Y. Served in the armed forces 1925-28, becoming corporal 11/1/26 and sergeant 6/6/27. Instructor in 30 cal. water-cooled Browning Machine Guns. Former member, Presbyterian church in Somerset and Johnstown, N.Y. Presently member of First Christian Church, Somerset. Past treasurer and past president of Somerset School Board. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 Saturday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, where services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, with the Rev. William J. Sleasman officiating.
