He was born March 7, 1931, in Somerset County, a son of the late Clyde and Anna Henry DeWitt. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers, Boyd, Roy Dale and Robert DeWitt, and sister, Carrie Mae Savage. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clara B. Allshouse DeWitt; three sons, James E. DeWitt and his wife, Theresa, Lexington, Ky.; Kevin L. DeWitt and wife, Jacqueline, Acme; and Mark W. DeWitt, Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren: Brianna Harr, Joshua, Matthew, Lindsay and Nathan DeWitt; and two brothers, Walter Lee DeWitt, Bullskin Township; and David DeWitt and his wife, Barbara, Melcroft. Elwood was retired from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service. He was later employed at the Westmoreland Manor Dietary Department for several years and he also worked for Tom DeWitt Construction. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, the Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) and American Legion Post 446, Mount Pleasant. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooks Funeral Home Inc., 406 E. Washington St., Mount Pleasant, where a service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Evelyn Stillwagon officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Nebo Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 446, Mount Pleasant.
