Dickey, eminent educator of Western Pennsylvania and native of Somerset County, died at his home in Pittsburgh, Monday, Dec. 20 at the age of 77. He served as superintendent of schools of Allegheny County for 19 years, retiring in 1940. His career as a school teacher began in the rural schools of Bedford and Somerset Counties. Before going to the Pittsburgh district in 1893 he was principal of the Salisbury School and of the Meyersdale School. Charles Emmet Dickey was born Sept. 24, 1871, on a farm in the Hay's Church district, Brothersvalley Township, where his cousin, Earl Dickey, now lives. He was the son of the Rev. Ephriam Dickey, a Lutheran minister, and Mrs. Josephine Carns Dickey. He started his education in the Walker school, and taught his first term of school at the age of 16 years. He attended the Meese normal school in Meyersdale and later received degrees from California State Normal School, University of Pittsburgh, Columbia and Harvard Universities. He married Miss Della Boyer of Salisbury, who was one of his pupils when he taught school there. Mrs. Dickey died in 1947. Dr. Dickey served on the facility of California State Normal School as professor of English and history, was supervising principal of the Avalon schools for 12 years, and was assistant superintendent of Allegheny County schools, before being elected to the office of county superintendent in 1922. He was a past president of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and a member of the council on education. He was president of the Ohio Valley Building and Loan Association, a trustee of the Thomas Patton institution of boys, chairman of a state commission for studying schools for the deaf and blind, a member of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, Lions Club and Presbyterian church. He is survived by two daughters, Josephine S. Dickey, associated with Radio City, New York City, and Mrs. C. W. Behrhorst, Pittsburgh; and two sons, P. H. Dickey, Baltimore, and Lloyd E. Dickey of California. Cousins in Somerset County include William H. Baldwin, Meyersdale; Charles D. Fritz, Garrett; Earl Dickey, Miss Mary Dickey, Mrs. Edward Broesecker, Mrs. Carl Broesecker and Mrs. Charles Hare of the Berlin district. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m., in the H.
