He was 83 years old, having been born on July 14, 1856,in Greenville Township, where he lived his entire life. About seventeen years ago, giving over his farm to his oldest son, Frank, he retired from active farming, remaining on the home place, however, until the death of his wife about three years ago, since which time he moved about among his children. Though from time to time he suffered from rheumatism and other ailments incident to old age, he was in good health for a man of his years until he was overcome by serious illness a few days before Christmas and was taken to the hospital on Christmas day. William Dietle was the son of John and Margaret (Ritter) Dietle, the father an immigrant from Germany, who settled in Greenville Township many years ago. He is survived by the following children: Frank, who still operates the home farm; Ephriam, near Hay's Mill; William and Henry, on a farm near Grantsville; Maggie, wife of George Meyers, of Vim, near Meyersdale; Eliza, wife of Marshal Arnold, residing on High Street, Meyersdale; and Emma, wife of Reid Meese of Salisbury; and also a step-daughter, Mrs. Hiram Brown of Sand Spring. He had nineteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His remains were removed to the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Marshal Arnold, in Meyersdale, and will be taken on Friday morning to the Greenville Lutheran Church, of which he was a life long member, where the funeral services will be conducted by Rev. S. D. Sigler at 11 o'clock, interment following in the church cemetery, under the direction of W. C. Price & Son, Meyersdale morticians. Mr. Dietle was a highly respected citizen of Greenville Township, having an unexcelled reputation for honesty and integrity. He made it a habit throughout his life never to borrow or be in debt to anyone. By frugal habits, honest dealings and hard work he made a satisfactory living for himself and family out of his farm. An example of Mr. Dietle's prompt and loyal business dealings is that for thirty years he never failed to renew his subscription to the Republican on the date of expiration, having been the present senior editor's first cash customer when, on March 1, 1910, he became the owner and publisher of this newspaper. The Republican staff will miss the annual visits of this fine old man, as he will be missed by relatives and a host of friends. Meyersdale Republican, January 4, 1940
