Dietz, 94, until April lived in Colonial Apartments, South Rosina Avenue, Somerset, died Aug. 4, 2000 in Virginia Beach, Va. Born in Johnstown, Sept. 4, 1905, son of William H. and Grace (Murray) Dietz. Resident of Somerset 1919-1949 and again from 1981 through April of 2000. Preceded in death by wife, the former Emily Margaret Shaffer; brothers, Robert and Kenneth; sisters, Leora McVehil (his twin), Romaine Garlitz, Billie Barkman, Adeline Harrison, and Anna Belle Dietz. Survived by son James W. and his wife, Virginia, "Ginger" (Beltz) Dietz, Virginia Beach, Va.; step grandsons Michael and Christopher Sabato; sister Elizabeth Graham-Korns of Patriot Manor, Somerset; and sister-in-law Naomi Shaffer of Jennerstown. In his early years he was a part-time employee of J. Watson Frease Grocery, Dosch's Drug and J.C. Penney in Somerset. Long career in education 1923-1980: elementary teacher, principal, Lincoln School, Jenner Township; math, history teacher, Somerset High School; principal, Jenner-Boswell, Jennerstown Joint High School, (North Star): teacher, student teacher supervisor and principal at Pullen Laboratory School, then assistant Professor of Education and after "retirement" a Supervisor of Student Teachers, all for Frostburg State College, Frostburg, Md. He graduated from Somerset High School in 1923 and in the same year began both teaching and pursuing his education at California State Normal School. He received his Normal School diploma in 1931, his B.S. from California State Teachers College in 1936 and his M.Ed. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1941. A member of Calvary United Methodist Church for all his years in Somerset, he was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Boswell from 1950 to 1962 and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Frostburg, Md., from 1963 to 1981. He served all as a Council member and each in various other capacities. Mr. Dietz was at various times Somerset Borough Assessor, Director of the Mary S. Biesecker Public Library, president of the Somerset County branch of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and a member of both the county and state associations of school retirees and the County Historical and Genealogical Society. He volunteered at the Springs Festival for 20 years. Friends will be received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Somerset, with the Rev. Raymond E. Lyon officiating. Interment, Husband Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family honors Mr. Dietz' request by directing memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
