Dively, Berlin civic leader and former president of Berlin Elementary School, died Feb. 17 in Memorial Hospital, Cumberland. He was 70. Mr. Dively died of complications caused by influenza after a brief illness. At the time of his death, he was serving as a director and dispatcher for the Berlin Ambulance Association and was chaplain and past president of the Berlin Fire Co. Active Citizen He was also serving as president of the Eastern Somerset County Municipal School Authority and was completing his 36th year as secretary of the Berlin Lions Club, of which he was also a charter member. Mr. Dively was a burgess of Berlin many years ago and president of the town council in the early 1940s. He began his teaching career in 1923 in the one-room schools at Pine Hill and McDonaldton and later moved to the grade school in Berlin, when it was erected. Until 1967, he taught at the new elementary school, and served as principal for 27 years until his retirement six years ago. His main subjects were geography and history. He was a member of the Berlin Brethren Church. His wife, the former Florence Philson, died in 1971, and Mr. Dively lived alone, as he wanted, visiting his children often and taking care of the ambulance calls from his home. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Neil (Phyllis) Smith of Cumberland, Md., Mrs. Merrill (Betty June) Wymer of Wheeling, W.Va., and Mrs. Robert (Barbara Ann) Craig of Mount Morris, and two sons, William A. and Thomas P., both of Berlin. There are 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services were conducted Feb. 21 in the Johnson and Son Funeral Home, the Rev. Ralph E. Mills officiating.
