Donati Sr., 74 of Circle Drive, Windber, formerly of Boswell and Jerome, died May 15, 2000 at home. Born Sept. 18, 1925 in Frontenac, Kan., a son of the late Herman and Gabriella (Muti) Donati. Survived by wife of 47 years, the former Betty L. Gray; sons Eugene L. Jr., New York City and David M., Allentown; and sisters Ester, wife of Richard Rullo, Hollsopple, and Dolores, wife of David Maldet, Davidsville. Member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Davidsville. Former member of the Connumach Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Laurel View Board of Directors and various teacher and principal organizations. A 1943 graduate of Conemaugh Township High School and a World War II veteran who voluntarily entered the U.S. Navy the same year. Following his discharge in 1946, enrolled in DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and was a member of the XI Chapter Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Also earned a Master's Degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh and numerous credits at other colleges. Began his teaching career at the Jerome Elementary School in 1951 where he also served as head teacher and principal. In 1963 became elementary principal of the former Jenner-Boswell Joint Schools, now North Star. Retired in that capacity in 1985 and proudly oversaw the construction of new school buildings in the district during his tenure. Also served one year as interim North Star Superintendent. Was a former PIAA basketball and football official. Loved the outdoors in autumn, golfing in the summer, bowling in the winter and education all year around. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffman Funeral Home, Route 403 and Church Road, Davidsville, where vigil for the deceased will be held Wednesday afternoon. Funeral mass at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne's Church, the Rev. Father Michael Lewandowski OFM. Conv. celebrant. Committal, Grandview Cemetery Johnstown. Daily American, May 16, 2000 [D805]
