Dudley, Sr., 69, died at his home on East Main St., Friday, Oct. 19th, after a long illness. Mr. Dudley, highly respected citizen and head of the only colored family in Berlin, born in New Castle, Pa., came to Berlin 43 years ago and conducted an up-to-date tonsorial shop where he served Berlin and vicinity in a courteous manner thoughout [sic] the years. Because of his fine character and kindly manner his friends were numbered by the hundreds. In early life he married Miss Anna Harris. To them three children were born - Esther, Mrs. Dennis Thomas, of Pittsburgh; Mabel, Mrs. Robert Dunbar, of Washington, and Alfred L. Jr., who is serving in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army in Washington. Mrs. Dudley and all three children survive. Mr. Dudley was a 32nd degree Mason, a charter member of the Berlin Concert Band, and an active member of the Berlin Lutheran Church. All the business places of Berlin were closed during the hours of the funeral services out of respect to a citizen who was a credit to the community in which he lived. The funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, at the Johnson Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert S. Nagle officiating. Many out of town people were in attendance. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. Interment in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, with Johnson & Son in charge. Meyersdale Republican, October 25, 1945
