His skull was fractured and he died without regaining consciousness. The accident occurred about 5:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the farm home of his mother and step-father. The young man had gone to take the animals to water, it was said. No one witnessed the accident, but shortly after he had left the house one of the children noticed the horse running loose and saw the youth lying on the ground. First aid was rendered by a local physician and the injured man was hurried to the hospital. Members of the family said the horse had not been worked for some time and was "frisky". The same animal caused Durst's father to fracture his arm several years ago they said. Young Durst was born at Grantsville March 1, 1920. He was well known in this community, having attended the local schools, and graduated from high school with the class of 1937. Since then he had been assisting on his parents' farm. A short time ago he had received his call for selective service and was preparing to leave within a few days. He was unmarried. In his early childhood he united with the New Germany Reformed Church of which he was a member of good standing. Surviving, besides his mother and step-father, are a brother, Robert Monn, foster son of Rev. and Mrs. I. S. Monn, Chambersburg, Pa., a half-brother, Billy Kamp, Grantsville, and three half-sisters, Mrs. Stanley Dunn, Johnstown, and Sara and Martha Kamp, Grantsville. Funeral services were conducted from the home Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 24, by the Rev. I. S. Monn. Interment was in the Grantsville cemetery. Pallbearers were Ray Fike, Harold Fike, William Merrill, Blaine Schunk, Mark Miller, and Carl Broadwater. Meyersdale Republican, February 26, 1942
