He was a son of the late Daniel and Eliza Compton Durst, and was born at New Germany, Md. He moved to Oakland 41 years ago where he resided ever since. Previous to that time he lived in Grantsville where he worked at the shoemaking trade. Mr. Durst's first wife was Amelia Sheets, after whose death he married Miss Lucinda Beachy, daughter of the late Samuel J. and Ruhama Knepper Beachy, of Grantsville, who survives him; also two sons, Earl, at home and Lloyd, of Wheeling W.Va. One sister, Miss Mary Jane Durst, who made her home with her brother and family, is the last survivor of a large family. Mr. Durst was the last civil War veteran living in Oakland. He served his country for three years and was honorably discharged. He was a shoemaker by trade, a good citizen, a man of pleasing personality and highly respected. He was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The funeral was held at his home and was largely attended. Rev. Trevey, his pastor, assisted by a former pastor, Dr. A. Moore, conducted the services. Rev. Anderson, of Mountain Lake Park, and members of the American Legion were present. The services were very impressive and the floral offerings were beautiful. Ward Beachy and son Lee and wife and child attended the funeral; also Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Durst and Mrs. Raley of near Grantsville. Meyersdale Republican, August 28, 1930
