Durst, 84 of Salisbury, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at his residence. He was born October 22, 1923 in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Homer F. and Mable M. (Lohr) Durst. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joann Piantidosi. He is survived by his wife, Helen (Beachy) Durst whom he met in 1946 and married November 19, 1950; two daughters: Barbara Ellen and husband Mark Stephens, Stafford, VA; Connie M. and husband, Patrick Samson, Centerville, VA; a brother, Luke Durst, Northville, MI; a sister, Helen Jones, Garden City, MI; three grandchildren: Jennifer N. Stephens, William P. Samson and Lauren Michelle Samson. Mr. Durst graduated from Salisbury High School in 1942 and was a member of the renowned Salisbury Community Band from 1946-1950. He entered the Army Air Force on February 1943, spent three years in the Army 3rd Air Force and was honorably discharged as Sergeant on February 1946. Mr. Durst began his career at First State Bank of Grantsville, MD in 1955, and became manager of Liberty Trust Co. and Vice President of W.M. Bancorp when he retired in 1988. Mr. Durst was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the choir and was a Sunday School Teacher. He was a member of the American Legion Earl H. Opel Post 459, Salisbury since 1946, Past Commander of post and finance officer since 1963, Home Association and Sons of American Legion and LA Societe 40/8 Voyageur 1370. A member of Meyersdale Lodge 554 F&M Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Harrisburg, Ali Ghan Shriners, Cumberland, MD, Transportation Committee for Handicapped Children and Committee on Grievance. Bob was a member of Salisbury Lions Club since 1951, serving past president and treasurer since 1975, Chairman of Maple Sugarin Time and Little League Tournament and he received the Melvin Jones Award. He was Salisbury Borough Auditor since 1960, Secretary of Somerset County Planning Committee, treasurer of Salisbury Elk Lick Veterans Memorial and Spruce Forrest Artistian Village, member of Salisbury Elk Lick Alumni Association and Allegheny Mountain Beekeepers Association. Past member of Salisbury Fire Co. and Garrett County Board of Realtors. His hobbies were gardening, beekeeping, scrap booking and collecting memorabilia. Friends were received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, Md. Services were held Monday, April 28, 2008 in St. John's Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David E. Fetter and Pastor Thomas Twigg officiating. Salisbury Lions Club held a memorial service Sunday at 6 p.m.; Meyersdale Lodge 554, F. &A.M. held a memorial service 7 p.m. on Sunday. Interment was in the Salisbury Cemetery, where graveside rites were accorded by the Salisbury American Legion, Post 459. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Memorial Fund.
