All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ SARAH CATHERINE DURST Grantsville, Maryland Mrs. Sarah Catherine Durst died at her home near Avilton about 10 o'clock Wednesday night, April 17, after an illness of some three weeks. Her health had been failing for several months and her death was attributed to a heart condition and complications due to her years. Mrs. Durst was aged 74 years, 8 months and 25 days. A daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth (Poleman) Layman, she was born at Shade Mills, a few miles east of here, July 22, 1866, on a farm near the home where she died. Her entire life was spent in this section of the county. Her parents, and their parents before them, were all natives of the county and resided on this farm which had been in possession of the family for approximately two hundred years. Mrs. Durst was the widow of M. Wesley Durst, who died April 8, 1931. They had been married for fifty-five years. She had been a faithful and devout member of the Mount Zion Methodist Church for many years and attended services regularly until ill health prevented. In her passing Mrs. Durst leaves two daughters, Mrs. Lacy Steele, Lonaconing, and Mrs. Lulu Warne, at home, eight sons, Marshall Durst and Ira Durst, Chicago, Ill.; Harry Durst, Johnstown, Pa.; Charles Durst, Long Stretch; Pierce, Sheridan, George and Norman Durst, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Linnie Chaney, Avilton, Mrs. Lulu Mulligan, Cumberland; four brothers, Albert Layman, Frostburg; Marx Layman, Jennings; Lewis Layman, Avilton, and Richard Layman, Grantsville, and ten grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the home at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, with the Rev. A. C. Bell, a former pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, under the direction of William Winterberg, local mortician. Meyersdale Republican, April 24, 1941
