CHARLES EISENTROUT

  Charles Eisentrout, last survivor of Barton Post, No. 42, and Thoburn Post, 
No. 11, G.A.R., and the oldest resident of Frostburg, died Monday afternoon, May 
2, 1932 at 2:30 o'clock.
  Mr. Eisentrout was bedfast for over 16 months, dying of old age.  He was born 
September 18, 1831, in Hanover, Germany and was aged 100 years, 7 months and 14 
days.
  He was the son of Charles Henry and Hannah Eisentrout and accompanied them to 
this country in 1854, settling in Eckhart, later removing to Barton.  In 1862, 
he enlisted in Company K, Fourth West Virginia Infantry.  He was wounded in the 
arm in the siege of Vicksburg, and was honorably discharged from service late in 
1868, remaining with his regiment and serving in the capacity of barber until 
the close of the war.  He followed alternately the occupations of barber and 
coal miner.
  Until he took to his bed, he was a conspicuous figure in the annual Memorial 
Day parades, being the flag-bearer.  And this same flag he so dearly loved and 
was proudly carried by him so many times was carried at the head of his funeral 
cortege.
  He was a member of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church and was baptized and 
confirmed in his native land.  He was the last survivor of his regiment and was 
accorded military honors at his burial by Henry Fangrieve Post, Veterans of 
Foreign Wars, six members of the post acting as pall-bearers.  Funeral services 
were conducted, Friday, at 3:30 p.m., in Zion German Evangelical Lutheran 
Church, where his body lay in state, by his pastor, Rev. Harry G. Yaggi.  
Interment was in the Alleghany Cemetery beside his beloved wife who died April 
10, 1907.
  He was married to Mary Ann Fea, June 5, 1854. To this union were born 13 
children, 7 of whom survive as follows:  Charles H. Eisentrout, Listonburg, Pa.; 
Mrs. William Whitehead, Midlothian, Md.; Mrs. Phoebe Robey and Mrs. Anna Bond, 
Lonaconing, Md.; John Eisentrout, Berlin, Pa.; Thomas Eisentrout and Mrs. Bessie 
Denniser, with whom he made his home, on Stover Street, Frostburg, Md.  In 
addition he is survived by 54 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and 2 great-
great-grandchildren.  The following named children preceded him to the grave:  
Mary Ellen, Loretta, Mollie, Rex, Joseph and Clementine.
