Mrs. Emerick died at 1 a.m. Sunday in the Allegheny Hospital, Cumberland, Md., the result of a fracture of the skull. Her infant son, James Emerick, suffered a concussion of the brain and died in the Cumberland Hospital, Wednesday morning. The husband and father, Charles W. Emerick, 29, escaped with minor injuries. Glenn Shiner of Madley, driver of the car, told investigating state motor policemen of the Bedford substation that the Emerick buggy was traveling without lights and he failed to see the horse-drawn vehicle in time to avoid collision with it. An inquest has been scheduled at Bedford Saturday morning, March 2. Meanwhile Shiner has been released under his own recognizance, pending the outcome of the inquest. State motor police said the accident happened along a rural route about 10 miles south of the Lincoln Highway and six miles north of Hyndman about 6:30 or 6:45 Saturday evening. Both the buggy and the auto were preceeding in a southerly direction to Hyndman. The car was believed to have crashed into the rear of the buggy. Mrs. Emerick and the baby boy, whom she held in her lap, were thrown from the buggy by the impact. Shiner and passing motorists took the injured woman and child to the Cumberland hospital. Mrs. Emerick died about 4 hours later from a possible fracture of the skull, major lacerations of the face and body and possible internal injuries. Mrs. Emerick was a daughter of A. W. and Hazel (Ritenour) Sander and was born May 11, 1922, in Fayette County. Surviving are her parents, now residing in Hyndman; her husband; and these brothers and sisters: Roy Sander, Latrobe R.D. 1; Ray Sander, Cumberland, Md.; Pearl, Billie, Glenn, Robert, Betty and Edna Sander, all at home. Mrs. Emerick was a member of the Evangelical Church at Hyndman. Funeral services for Mrs. Emerick were conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Harvey Zeigler Funeral Home in Hyndman by Rev. George Bittner, pastor of the Hyndman Pentecostal Church. Interment was in the Palo Alto Cemetery, located five miles south of Hyndman. Services for the child were held this (Thursday) afternoon.
