EMERICK Sick and Despondent Miner Shot Himself Victim of Silicosis Took His Life to End His Suffering Joseph W. Emerick, 42, fired two shots into his chest with a revolver in his home at Jenner Mine No. 2 at 6 o'clock last Thursday evening and died instantly. He had been suffering from silicosis and had not been able to work the last few months. While his Wife was busy with her evening chores he went upstairs to his bedroom and was gone but a few minutes when Mrs. Emerick heard two shots and ran upstairs to see what had happened and found him dead, apparently by his own hand. She had hidden his revolver some time ago, fearing he might use it to put an end to his misery, and did not know he had recovered it. Coroner Dosch made an investigation and pronounced it a clear case of suicide. Emerick is survived besides his wife by one son and three daughters. Meyersdale Republican, July 1, 1943
