Endsley Dead at Age of 88 Hon. James William Endsley, 88, for many years most prominent businessman and citizen of Somerfield Borough, died at 11:45 p.m., Dec. 20, in the Somerset Community Hospital where he had been a patient since Dec. 3, suffering from a fractured hip due to a fall in his home in Somerset. He was born September 15, 1857, in Somerfield, a son of William Gilbert and Julianne (Watson) Endsley and was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. After completing a public school course he fitted himself for the teaching profession, but after one term in Fayette County, he decided to engage in the mercantile business with his father. He also engaged in the lumber and coal mining business and operated a hub and spoke factory for many years, and was one of the organizers and directors of the Somerfield National Bank. A staunch Republican, Mr. Endsley served as the first burgess of Somerfield and was also a borough councilman and school director for many years. From 1905 to 1909 he served two terms as a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, and later served one term as State Senator for the Somerset-Bedford- Fulton tri-county district. A life-long member of the Methodist church he devoted many years to Sunday school work. In 1880 Mr. Endsley was united in marriage with Miss Mary Connelly, only daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles H. Connelly. Mrs. Endsley was the organizer and first regent of Great Crossings Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and was prominent in the work of the local chapter and the National D.A.R. Society. To Mr. and Mrs. Endsley three children were born, namely: Edna Mae who was married to Lucius Evans White, and was killed in an automobile accident in Washington, D.C., some years ago; Gilbert Frey Endsley of Somerset, and Mary Julianne Endsley Springer, who died several years ago. Surviving are his son, Gilbert, mentioned above, and seven grandchildren. Following the death of Mrs. Endsley and the inundation of the town of Somerfield by the Yough dam, Mr. Endsley and his grand-daughter, Maryanna Springer moved to Somerset and resided on West Patriot St. until the aged man met with the accident which caused his death. Funeral services were held in the Rishebarger Funeral Home in Addison, last Sunday at 2 p.m., with Rev. James Bird of the Addison M. E. Church officiating, followed by interment in the Addison Cemetery, where the remains of other members of the Endsley family repose.
