ENGLE Grantsville, Maryland Demise of Mrs. Etta V. Engle Aged Farmeress Garnered by Grim Reaper - Survived by Ten Daughters and One Son In the death of Mrs. Etta V. Engle, the Grantsville community sadly lost one of its best known and most dearly beloved residents. She was also one of the most generous dispensers of the hospitality of her home. Mrs. Engle, widow of the late Ralph Engle, died Tuesday morning, July 21, at 12:40 o'clock, at her farm home, "Englewood", near Grantsville, following a critical illness of two weeks caused by a heart attack. She was a native of Grantsville, born Sept. 27, 1860, and was aged 81 years, 9 months and 24 days at the time of her demise. She spent most of her life in this community where she had a wide circle of relatives and friends. She was the daughter of the late George L. and Safora Rench Layman. Surviving are ten daughters and one son, namely: Hazel, Mrs. W. F. Fisher, Sidney, N.Y.; Bess, Mrs. S. R. Willets, Bloomfield, N.J.; Esther, Mrs. William Nielson, Hartford, Conn.; Vida, Mrs. H. G. Osburn, Sidney, N.Y.; Helen, Mrs. H. A. MacMannis, and Althea, Mrs. R. A. Goetz, Cumberland, Md.; Miss Ida Engle and Martha, Mrs. M. S. Brookhart, Oakland, Md.; Elizabeth, Mrs. C. W. Wadsworth, Terra Alta, W.Va.; Miss Beulah Engle, at home, and John R. Engle, Fairmont, W.Va.; also eleven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. C. G. Stocker, Roundup, Montana, and three brothers, Norval and George Layman, Newell, Iowa, and Harry C. Layman, Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Engle was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She and the late Mrs. Ellen Younkin were the organizers of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. Mrs. Engle was chosen as the president, in which capacity she served for a number of years, after which she was elected honorary president. She was also active in the Homemakers' Club, and other community functions until recent years. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon, July 23, in the Grantsville Methodist Church, with Rev. V. R. Gillum officiating. Simple hymns, "Sweet Hour of Prayer", "Lead Kindly Light" and "Rock of Ages" were sung by the Methodist choir. Pallbearers were Harry and George Edwards, Joseph Fahey, Morris Beachy, Harold Baum and Henry F. Durst. Interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery under the direction of William Winterberg, local mortician. All of Mrs. Engle's children came to attend the services.
