Engle died very suddenly at his home in the village of St. Paul, Elk Lick Township, Sunday, Feb. 11, 1940, at the age of 69 years, 6 months and 2 days, as the result of a heart attack. His death came to his family and friends as a great surprise, as he was not bedfast during his last illness, and it is not likely that either he or any member of his family suspected that he was seriously ill, although he had said something about not feeling very well within a few days of his death. He was the son of the late John B. and Elizabeth Tressler Engle, who were well known citizens of Elk Lick Township for many years. He was born and reared on a farm, but for many years made coal mining his chief occupation, from which he retired only two years ago. He is survived by his wife, Annie, who was Miss Annie Shumac before her marriage, and by these children: Homer of St. Paul, Mrs. Harry Hause of Somerset, Ward of Meyersdale, and Harry of Coal Run. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Harvey and Wilson of St. Paul, Theodore and Elmer of Summit Mills, Mrs. Clara Smith of Columbus, Ohio, and Miss Susan Engle of Garrett. The funeral was held in St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church, of which Mr. Engle was a member, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Alvin J. Forry, today (Thursday) at 2:30 p.m. The burial arrangement was in charge of Stanley M. Thomas, Salisbury mortician, with burial in St. Paul Cemetery. In the death of Mr. Engle, St. Paul has lost a good citizen, his wife a devoted husband and his children a kind and loving father. Meyersdale Republican, February 15, 1940
