"Whitey" Escherich, 79, of Stoystown (Ferrelton) died Jan. 15, 2000, at VA Medical Center, Altoona. Born Aug. 14, 1920, in Kimmelton, son of Daniel and Orpha (Hoffman) Escherich. Preceded in death by parents, first wife, the former June Chrisner, second wife, the former Mardelle Paugh, sisters, Helen Wheeler and Martha Wentz, and brother, Albert Escherich. Survived by sons, Daniel W. Escherich and fiancee, Cathy Guessford, Pennsville, N. J. and William Escherich Wentz, married to former Lynn White, Concorde, Calif.; sisters: Faye, married to Andy Matse, and Evelyn Schreffler, both of Stoystown; grandchildren: Tony Escherich, Pennsville, N.J., Beth Escherich, West Chester, Christian, Gretchen, and Joshua Wentz, all of Concorde, Calif. Staff Sergeant in U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II, having served in the European Theatre based in England. Flew 22 missions with the 391st Bombardment Squadron, 34th Bombardment Group. Received the Purple Heart, Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and E.A.M.E. Campaign Medal. Member of Grace Lutheran Church, Stoystown, Robert P. Hite Post 257 American Legion, Stoystown, V.F.W., and Jenner Rod and Gun Club. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown. Viewing from 9 a.m. until service at 10 a.m., Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church. Rev. Walter L. Startzel, officiating. Interment, Odd Fellows Cemetery, Stoystown. Memorials may be given to Grace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Stoystown, PA 15563. Legion Memorial Service will be held at 8 p.m., Monday. Graveside military rite by Menoher V.F.W.
