Albert Evans, 89, of Somerset, died April 26, 1993, in the Somerset Hospital. Born June 3, 1903, in Ebensburg, son of the late John Edgar and Frances Sarah (Shoemaker) Evans. Preceded in death by his first wife, the former Eleanor Estelle Fowler; second wife, the former Hester Ann Shaw; by four brothers: John E. Jr., Norman, Truxton and Richard Evans, and two sisters: Mersha Bender and Enid Leech. Survived by his third wife, Helen (Seibert) Evans, and sons: James M. Evans, Chicago, Ill.; Bruce D. Evans, Pittsburgh; Dr. Peter A. Evans and Dr. Geoffrey F. Evans, both of Brunswick, Maine. Also 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A brother of Mrs. Petrick H. (Doris) McGuire of Bethesda, Md. A 1922 graduate of Mercersburg Academy and a 1926 graduate of Lehigh University. A retired mining engineer. He was a mining engineer from 1927 to 1952 for Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates. From 1952 to 1955, he was the owner and operator of Heilwood (Pa.) Coal Company and the Cliff Coal Company of W.Va. From 1965 to 1980, he was an engineering consultant for mining in the United States. He was renowned for the article he wrote on coal mining in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Was a Paul Harris Award Fellow of Somerset Rotary Club. Member of Somerset Country Club. No viewing or visitation. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Msgr. Samuel J. Tomaselli, Celebrant. Interment, Holy Name Catholic Cemetery, Ebensburg, Pa., where committal service will be held at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, with Msgr. Arnold Gaus officiating. Arrangements by Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home.
