He was born June 17, 1928 in Meyersdale, a son of the late Clarence and Alice (Miller) Firl. He is survived by his wife, Bette (Christner) Firl, whom he was married to for sixty years. Also survived by these children: Dan and his wife Jan; Robyn, wife of Jack Gauntz, both of Meyersdale; two grandchildren: Jill Marker and Steven Firl; great-grandchildren: Maddie, Sam and Eric Marker; brother Robert, Morongo Valley, CA and his aunt Dorothy Bradburn Thomas, Frederick, MD. He was a retired employee of Cooper Jarrett Trucking Company for twenty-five years, where he received a safe driving award for over a "million miles". William was a devoted husband and a loving father. He was a member of the Grace Brethren Church, where he served the Lord as head Deacon for many years. His Christian influence could be summed-up by a comment written to him in a card: To a person who taught me some life lessons with the least amount of words but used his eyes, heart and prayer. He enjoyed meeting with his friends every morning for coffee. He was a member of the "over the hill gang." Friends were received Thursday at the M. Ray Leckemby Funeral Home, Meyersdale. He was taken Friday to the Grace Brethren Church to lie in State from 10 to 11 a.m. at the time of the service with Pastor Randy Haulk officiating. Interment at Meyersdale Area Union Cemetery.
