All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ LEROY FORQUER Leroy Forquer, widely known Civil War veteran and highly respected resident of Ursina Borough for more than 50 years, succumbed to the infirmities of old age at his home in Ursina on Wednesday, October 26, at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 17 days, having been born May 9, 1843, at Brandonville, W.Va., a son of Samuel and Isabelle McGrew Forquer. He served in Co. I, 4th W. Va. Cav., as Corporal, in defense of the Union. He was a charter member and adjutant of Ross Rush Post, No. 361, Grand Army of the Republic, and a member of Ursina Lodge, I.O.O.F., since 1872. He was also a member of the Jersey Baptist Church for 50 years. In 1871 he gave up a teaching position in Brandonville, W. Va., to engage in the mercantile business in Ursina. He was in partnership for years with John Faidley, and later established a business of his own. He served as postmaster of Ursina from 1889 to 1893. Mr. Forquer married Mary Brooks Harned in 1876. She preceded him to the grave in 1879. To this union were born the following children: William Harned Forquer, who died in infancy, James C. M. Forquer, who was commissioned Captain in the Engineer Reserve Corp, but was called by death Nov. 18, 1917, while awaiting the call to arms. Mr. Forquer was remarried in 1884 to Sabina D. Rush, who, with the following children, survives: Mary A. Forquer, teacher in the Meyersdale school; Sara Isabelle, Mrs. Ward Coffroth, Somerset; Carrie, Mrs. Ralph W. Van Sickel, Confluence; Rush M., Rochester, N.Y.; and Anna, at home. Eleven grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at his late home on Saturday, October 29, at 2:30 p.m., in charge of Rev. J. L. Updegraf, pastor of the Church of God at Mt. Pleasant, Pa., assisted by Rev. J. H. Bush of Markleysburg. A male quartet sang "It is well with my soul," and "The Christian's Good Night." Members of the Harry Lichty Post, American Legion, Confluence, acted as pall-bearers. The services at the grave were in charge of Ursina Lodge, I.O.O.F., and Harry Lichty Post, American Legion. Among those attending the funeral were: Mrs. Gertrude Forquer, Louise Forquer, Eugene Forquer, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hart, and Neri Hart, Carmichaels, Pa.; Dr. and Mrs. A. G. DeFoe, Bruceton Mills, W.Va.; Mrs. Doyton Forquer, and Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, of Brandonville, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Morgan, Albright, W.Va.; Lee A. Smith and Miss Lillian Smith, Morgantown, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs. J. Benton Crowe, and C. F. Smith, Uniontown; Mrs. Alletta Mayer, and Rev. Lorring Howell and family, Amboy, W.Va.; Rev. J. H. Bush, Markleysburg; Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Parnell, Mr. and Mrs. Rush Parnell, Louise Parnell, Wilson, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Rish, Acosta; Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Sellers, Confluence; Mrs. Calvin Lephart, Casselman, Pa.; Mrs. Ellen Crossen and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ream, Kingwood, Pa.; Mrs. Wm. Heil, Casselman, Pa.; Earl and Mrs. Ruth Sellers, Connellsville.
