Friend, 77, registrar of wills for the Garrett County, Maryland orphans' court for 32 years, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Dawson, Monday at 5 p.m. He had been in failing health for some time and suffered a stroke of paralysis Friday. He never regained consciousness. Mr. Friend was a lifelong resident of Garrett County, having been born April 4, 1867, a son of the late Henry E. and Sarah Blackburn Friend. He was a member of the Mt. Lake Park Methodist Church for 50 years, and was a member of both the Masonic and the Knights of Pythias Lodge. A school teacher in the county for 20 years, he then became registrar of wills and held that position for 32 years. He was a Republican. December 27, 1893, he married Miss Carrie L. Pope, who died December 3, 1942. He resided in Oakland, Maryland the last seven years. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Walter W. Dawson; a grandson, Lt. Walter Edwin Dawson, USNR, Washington; three brothers, W. S. Friend, Oakland; Ray C. Friend, Mt. Lake Park; Clifford Friend, Seattle, Wash.; and sisters, Miss Susan M. Friend, Mt. Lake Park; Mrs. J. Arthur DeWitt, Hoyes. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Reese Burns, pastor of the Methodist Church, Mt. Lake Park, officiating. Interment in Oakland Cemetery.
