Born June 9, 1896, in Friendsville, he was a son of the late Homer and Katherine (Van Sickle) Friend. Mr. Friend was principal of Friendsville High School in 1926 and taught at Tridelphia High School, Elm Grove, W. Va., for two years before going to Alliance College in Cambridge Springs in 1927, where he was professor of biology until his retirement in 1968. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Hazel M. (Savage) Friend; two sons, James A. Friend, Edison, N. J.; and Elbert Friend, Cambridge Springs: one sister, Miss Lena Friend, Hagerstown, Md.; and two brothers, Frank Friend, Baltimore; and Landall Friend, Hopwood, Pa. The body was returned to Minnich-Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, Md., and removed to Oak Grove Church of the Brethren for funeral service Friday afternoon with Rev. Donald Matthews officiating.
