Friend, 89, 869 Buttermilk Hill Road, Franklin, formerly of Huntingdon, died Aug. 28, 2005, at UPMC Northwest. Born Feb. 29, 1916, in Garrett, a son of John Thomas Sr. and Cora Kunnegunder (Hanft) Friend. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Hannah Mary Gaines, whom he married Jan. 27, 1945; brothers, Karl and August Friend and two sisters, Evelyn Friend and Ruth Pearsall. Survived by daughter, Rev. Bonnie Tyack Friend King and husband, Rev. John V. King, Franklin; grandchildren: Paul W. King and wife Jennifer, Girard, David E. King, Columbia, Tenn. and Mary E. King, Maineville, Ohio; two great-grandchildren; brother, John T. Friend Jr. and wife, Jini, Dallas, Texas and sisters, Esther F. Friend, Acosta and Ruby P. Pearsall, Nampa, Idaho. An Army veteran of World War II and continued serving with the Reserves retiring as a Lt. Colonel after serving for 30 years. He was the executive director of Huntingdon County Housing Authority and a business manager for Juniata College for 25 years. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Siverly. Former member of First U.M. Church, Huntingdon, where he served on numerous committees. Served on the board of two camps owned by the Central Pa. Conference of the United Methodist Church. Very active charter member of Huntingdon Lions Club where had perfect attendance for 65 years and received the Melvin Jones Award. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home Inc. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Siverly. The Rev. James L. Tubbs, district superintendent of the Franklin District of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment, Blooming Rose Cemetery, Friendsville, Md.
