Gard, 73, of Rockwood RD 3, died Aug. 14, 1973, in Somerset Community Hospital. Born Sept. 20, 1899, in Springfield, Ill., he was a son of Edmund S. and Mary (Watts) Gard. Surviving are his wife, the former Clara Boice; two sons, Richard E., Penn Hills, Pittsburgh; Edmund S. Gard III, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Carol Hay, Irwin; four grandchildren and a sister, Miss Mary Gard, Wilkinsburg. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ida Greenaway Gard, in 1941; also by a 17 year old daughter, Mary Alice, in 1944. He graduated from a military academy in Elton, Ill., the University of Illinois, and did graduate work at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Pittsburgh. Before retirement, Mr. Gard was supervising principal of Rockwood High School for 11 years, and was past president of Kiwanis Club of Greensburg. He was a member of New Centerville Fire Company, and a Lt. Commander in the Navy during World War II. Friends are being received at William J. Wood Funeral Home, Rockwood, where a funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Greensburg, with Rev. Gene Abel officiating.
