Garlitz Sr., 68, Freeport, died May 8, 2004, in his home. Born July 30, 1935, in Somerset and resided in Freeport since 1979. Preceded in death by father, Harold Edward Garlitz. Survived by wife of 46 years, E. Odessa (Lamberson) Garlitz whom he married on June 30, 1957; mother, Hazel (Jones) Garlitz, Somerset; son, Edward H. Garlitz Jr., Buffalo Township; daughters, Beth A. (Terry) Warnick, Kittaning, Holly K. (Barry Brown) Garlitz, Seattle, Wash., Gwen J. (Michael) Dubas, Harmar Township; four grandchildren, Clinton Warnick, Reanna Frame, Diana Garlitz and Laura Garlitz; two great-grandchildren, Camryn Warnick and Damien Frame; and brother, William R. (Alexandra) Garlitz, Charleroi. He received his bachelors of science degree in education from Indiana State Teachers' College, Indiana, Pa., a masters degree in biology from Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y. and a masters degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh in education. He received an Ed.D. from Nova University, Florida. Dr. Garlitz retired in 1993 from Freeport Area School District after 14 years as district superintendent. Previously, he was superintendent of Eckerd Wilderness Schools, Brooksville, Fla.; science curriculum specialist for Bucks County Public School District, Doylestown; taught science at Birmingham School district, Birmingham, Mich. and Highland Park Community College, Highland Park, Mich. and Tarentum School District. Dr. Garlitz was a member and elder of the Natrona Heights Presbyterian Church, Natrona Heights; Elks Lodge, Etna; Moose Lodge, Glenshaw; Doylestown Masons; New Castle Consistory where he obtained his 32nd degree; Syria Shrine, Harmar; and Three Rivers Dance Club. Additionally he enjoyed traveling, golfing and dancing. In his youth he was an Eagle Scout. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Dennis J. Daugherty Funeral Home, 324 Fourth St., Freeport. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Natrona Heights Presbyterian Church, Natrona Heights. The Rev. R. Cameron Malcolm IV officiating. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
