(Bill) 06/01/06 Daily American William R. "Bill" Garlitz, 69, Charleroi, passed away May 30, 2006, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born Dec. 18, 1936, in Somerset, a son of the late Harold Garlitz and his mother Hazel Jones Garlitz, who survives and resides in Somerset. In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by a brother, Edward Garlitz Sr. Along with his mother, he is survived by his wife of 41 years, Alexandra Zelem Garlitz, Charleroi; and two daughters, Jennifer Stile and husband Sam (who was a close confidante and friend to Bill), Charleroi; Laura Garlitz and husband, Stacy Melton, Conway, S.C.; three grand-children, Stefon Stile, Charleroi, who regarded Bill as a second father; and Garrett and Jacob Melton, Conway, S.C. He will be dearly missed by numerous family-like neighbors and close friends. Bill was a member of the Somerset Church of the Brethren and a spiritual lover of nature. He was also a former Charleroi Councilman and served as a principal for the Monongahela Elementary School, Carroll Middle School, assistant principal of Ringgold High School and received his degrees from California University and West Virginia University. Bill belonged to the Masonic Lodge No. 615 F&AM of Charleroi, the Syria Shriners AAONMS and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, both of Pittsburgh. He served his county during the Korean Conflict as a Marine. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Ed Melenyzer Funeral Homes Inc., 825 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, where Masonic services will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. James Ragan of the Holy Ghost Byzantic Church officiating.
