Gartland, 70, of Somerset, died June 6, 1976 at the Garvey Manor, Hollidaysburg. Born Sept. 9, 1905 in Altoona. Preceded in death by his parents Albert and Flora Ewing Garland and by a sister Mrs. Myrtle Grimme. Survived by two sisters, Mrs. Marie Dumm and Miss Margaret, both of Altoona; also by 10 nephews and nieces, including the Rev. Richard Grimme of St. Michael's Church, Hollidaysburg; Sister Mary Albert Grimme and Sister Mary Alberta Grimme, both sisters of St. Joseph. Father Gartland received his early education in the Altoona schools. In 1921 he matriculated at St. Vincent's College, Latrobe, for completion of high school, college and seminary training. He was ordained as a Catholic priest on Feb. 28, 1931 and served these churchs (sic): Sacred Heart Church, Altoona from 1931 to 1932; St John Gaulbert of Johnstown from 1932 to 1943 and St. Peter's Catholic Church, Somerset and its missions, St. Joseph's Church, Boswell, and St. Michael's Church, Listie, from 1943 to 1970. It was during these years that the new St. Peter's Church, Parish Hall and School were built in Somerset. In additioin (sic) to his church duties, he had served as chaplain at Somerset State Hospital; was a member of Diocesian Liturgical Commision; School Board of the Dioceses; building Commision of the Dioceses; and served as presidendent (sic) of the Diocesian Priest's Senate. He was also a past president of Somerset Rotary Club. The body will lie in state from 12 noon until 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday in St: Peter's Catholic Church where a Concelebrated Pontifical Mass of the Christian Burial will be offered with the Most Rev. Father James J. Hogan, Bishop of the Johnstown Altoona Diocese, as the principal celebrant. Interment, Calvary Cemetery, Altoona, under the direction of the Richard E. Hauger Funeral Home.
