Charles Philson Gartner, 82 of Meyersdale, died Jan. 8, 1999 at VA Medical Center, Altoona. Born April 13, 1916 in Pittsburgh, the eldest son of Frank A. and Grace A. (Philson) Gartner. Also preceded in death by a brother, Frank A., Jr. Survived by two adopted sons, Hansbernhard Gartner-Volkmann, Germany, and Gordon P. Gartner-Chan, China, 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, several cousins, four nieces and one nephew. He was a decorated enlisted veteran of World War II, serving from August 1941 until August 1945. A member of Pennsylvania's 28th Infantry Division during its service in Europe, Rev. Gartner was a casualty of the Battle of the Bulge. During the Korean Conflict, he served as an Army Chaplain in Korea, the U.S. and Europe. An ordained Lutheran pastor, Rev. Gartner was assigned to parishes in New York, New jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. Special civilian assignments to the military were in Alaska and Hong Kong. A private interment service was held Jan. 10, 1999 in Salisbury Cemetery with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating. Newman Funeral Home Inc., Salisbury, was in charge of arrangements.
