Gates, 54, a veteran of World War I, died last Saturday noon at his home in Glade City, Meyersdale R.D. 2, after a prolonged illness which resulted from his service in the war. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Bere Gates, he was born at Hopewell, Bedford County, Pa., on Feb. 22, 1890. Prior to making his home at Meyersdale he resided in Somerset, where he became a member of Company C, 110th Infantry, with which unit he served overseas during World War I. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. Andrew L. Gates is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rose (McKenzie) Gates, two sons, Andrew, Jr., residing in Louisiana, and Ed J. Gates, Bedford; and three brothers - Clyde, Pittsburgh; Dale, Philadelphia, and Porter, with the Armed Forces. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home by Rev. S. D. Keiser, pastor of the Meyersdale Methodist Church. About 18 members of the old Company C, 110th Infantry attended the funeral services of their comrade. Interment was in Somerset County Memorial Park under the direction of H. R. Konhaus. Rev. I. Woodrow of Somerset read the ritual of the V.F.W. at the grave and the Meyersdale post of the American Legion furnished the firing squad. Taps was sounded by Nat La Cavera. The pallbearers were Norman Zimmerman, Salisbury; Wm. Leckemby, John Leslie, Lawrence Hartle, Meyersdale; and Peter Stutzman and Stewart Brant of Somerset - all members of old Co. C.
