Gauntz died at his home on High Street, on Christmas morning a few hours before the dinner which was being prepared in celebration of the 50th anniversary of his marriage to Catherine Bittner. They were married December 22, 1898, in the Lutheran parsonage here. The couple planned to observe their golden wedding in 1948 on Christmas day, when most of their children could be at home. Mr. Gauntz was happy and active the day before, making preparations for the home-coming of the children and the double celebration of Christmas and the golden wedding. But death overtook him before he awoke the morning of the great day. John W. Gauntz was born in Garrett County, Md., August 21, 1877, and was a retired Baltimore and Ohio engineer. He was a member of Amity Evangelical and Reformed Church. Besides his wife, surviving are six children: Mrs. W. H. Habel, Lancaster; Mrs. Charles Funka, Washington, Pa.; Charles Gauntz and Harry Gauntz, Meyersdale; Mrs. John Siehl, Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Frank Saitz, Plymouth, Mich. The two latter were not planning to attend the anniversary celebration because of the distance and the difficulties of leaving their families, but they made the emergency trip to be here for the father's funeral, Tuesday. Also surviving are the following brothers: Ed, Walter and William Gauntz, all of Meyersdale; Albert Gauntz of Garrett and Samuel Gauntz of Cumberland, Md. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at his home with the Rev. Edwin C. Nagle of Amity Church, officiating. A group of B. & O. Railroad men were the pall bearers. Interment was made in the Reformed Cemetery under the direction of H. R. Konhaus. Meyersdale Republican, December 30, 1948
