Gauntz, a veteran retired B. & O. trainman and locomotive engineer, died at the home of his son, William, on Sherman Street, Meyersdale, at 6 a.m. Friday, aged 89 years, 9 months, 22 days. He was born September 26, 1852, a son of Walter and Christina (Shoemaker) Gauntz. He came to Meyersdale many years ago from The Cove, Garrett County, Md., where he spent his youth. He was a sterling, upright citizen and left his impress on the community by noble traits of character transmitted to his numerous progeny. The following children survive: Albert C. Gauntz, Garrett; S. E. Gauntz, Cumberland, Md.; W. C. Gauntz, John W. Gauntz, E. J. Gauntz, all of Meyersdale. One daughter, Sarah Christner Gauntz, preceded him in death. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m., in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rev. Glenn Stahl of Somerset officiating. Meyersdale Republican, July 24, 1941
