Gavel, 76, of Acosta, formerly of Johnstown, died September 30, 1988, at Memorial Hospital. Born June 2, 1912, in Kaylor, Armstrong County. Son of Walter and Rose (Furman) Gavel. Preceded in death by parents and brothers George and Andrew. Brother of Stephen, married to former Emma Gean McGee and Frank (Pat), married to the former Mary (Tulenko), both of Acosta. Also one niece and several nephews. Member of Saint John's Co-Cathedral, Johnstown. Somerset Aerie 1801 F.O.E.; Jenner Rod and Gun Club; UMWA Johnstown, Chapter 2; DAV; and Somerset Post 181 American Legion. Retired miner for Bethlehem Steel Corp. and retired in 1974 with 17 years of service with the Pennsylvania State Employment Office, Johnstown. Army veteran of World War II and wounded in action in Europe. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home, Allegheny Street, Boswell, where Wake Service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday and Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday at Saint John's Catholic Church, Acosta, with Father Benjamin Dykas officiating.
