The son of Leo and Lucy (Friedline) Gerber, he was born Oct. 24, 1935, in Rockwood. He is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Chris. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Betty Ann (Deitt) Gerber. Father to daughter Lynn Ann Gerber, son Eric and wife Linda, Gainesville, Va., and daughter Ellen Louise Gerber of Cresson. Grandchildren Kenny and Nathan Davis and Alexandra Gerber. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Amphion as 1st class machinist mate. He was a welder by profession, working for Bethlehem Steel and several mining companies. In his later years he worked across the country building hydroelectric plants in California and metro subway tunnels in Washington, D.C. After retiring, he spent his time being an avid outdoors-man and hunter and spending time with his closest friends at "The Camp." Richard had an enormous heart and never missed an opportunity to help out neighbors and friends. He was a trustee of the Rockwood Christian and Missionary Alliance Church at which he took such joy of taking care of the grounds. His fantastic cooking at many banquets and dinners will be remembered. Those who had the opportunity to be touched by Richard's love have been blessed. He will be forever thought of and missed by all of us. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home, Rockwood, and from 1 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Rockwood Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, the Rev. Patrick Walsh, officiating. A Masonic service by Lodge 358 F&AM will be held at 8:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment at Rockwood IOOF Cemetery with Military Honors by the Somerset County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the R o c k w o o d Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in memory of Rich.
