Born in Finzel, Md., she grew up in Meyersdale, attended Juniata College, Memorial Hospital School of Nursing obtaining an R. N. diploma, and the University of Pittsburgh, obtaining a bachelor of science degree. She taught nursing and science courses in Pittsburgh and McKeesport. She married Robert E. Gettig of Cumberland, Md. in 1943. They lived in Pittsburgh and then Long Island N.Y. They moved to Clearwater, Fla. in 1964, and Robert passed away in 1965. Bertha continued to work as an R.N., raising their five children. Bertha later relocated to Tarpon Springs in 1985. In 1986 she underwent radical pelvic surgery. She recovered well from surgery but subsequently battled respiratory difficulty frequently until her death on Sept. 23. Survivors include two sons; Bob Gettig of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Rick Gettig of Old Town, Fla,; three daughters; Betty Holden of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Brenda Gettig of San Diego, Calif.; and Linda Pedersen of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Evelyn Ludwig of Somerset; an aunt, Awilda Wilhelm of Somerset; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Burial was Sept. 26 at Serenity Gardens, Garden of Prayer, Largo, Fla. New Republic, November 3, 1994 [G0358]
