Gladis, 67, Scalp Level Borough, went to be with the Lord Oct. 19, 2006, at Conemaugh Medical Center. Born May 25, 1939, in Passaic, N.J., a son of Edward P. and Elizabeth (Bodrogi) Gladis. Preceded in death by parents, brothers Raymond and Frederick Gladis and sisters Gail Barris and Maryann Montgomery. Survived by wife of 36 years, Violet (Vizi) Gladis and daughter Sabrina, wife of Kevin Uebel, Windber. Also survived by sisters Linda Cuva-Futter, Anna Allen, Lisa Kuhn, all of N.J. and Gloria Robertson, N.C. Also survived by special niece Lois and husband Joseph Ference, Windber and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was a contractor who worked for various local construction companies. He especially enjoyed the work he did for Shaw Steeple Jacks. He was also a police officer for the former Scalp Level Borough Police Department. Richard was the acting mayor of Scalp Level Borough, having served for the past five years. As mayor, he was instrumental in obtaining, purchasing and securing funds for the Scalp Level Borough Municipal Building. He was in the process of developing and working with the Scalp Level VFW on the installation of a veterans monument at the municipal building. During his service he was responsible for securing all grants particularly for play-grounds, sidewalk restoration and housing renovation. He oversaw day to day operations of all aspects of the borough with true leadership and 24-hour dedication. He worked hand in hand with the Windber Police Department for the safety and the security of the municipality and worked with various neighboring municipalities for sharing various services. Member of Windber Fire Company No. 1, where Richard was an active lieutenant of the Fire Police for the past eight years. He loved woodworking and was responsible for constructing the wooden benches that can be found throughout the recreation park and the borough of Windber. Member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Windber. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the William Kisiel Funeral Home, Windber where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
