GLANTZER Instantly Killed While Walking on Highway John W. Glantzer, 54, formerly of Cumberland, but residing in Glade City the last two years, met instant death while walking on the highway leading from Meyersdale to Sand Patch, about 6 o'clock Wednesday evening, when he was hit by a truck driven by Dennis Deist, of Meyersdale. Deist, a man of excellent repute and regarded by those who know him well, as a careful and competent driver, stated after the accident that he was blinded by the headlights of two approaching automobiles and had his vision additionally obscured by rain and snow that were falling while he was driving a cattle truck, belonging to his employer, John B. Meyers, eastward through Glade City, and was unable to see Glantzer who was walking on the road toward his home ahead of the cattle truck. It was not until Deist felt the impact of the blow when the truck struck the pedestrian, that he realized that he had run down a man in the dark. Deist immediately stopped to render what aid he could, and was shocked to learn that the man who was hit was instantly killed. An examination of Glantzer's body showed that the unfortunate man had skull fracture, both jaws broken, a compound fracture of the right leg, two broken ribs, and lacerations of the upper lip. Deputy Coroner C. S. Beck of Rockwood and Pvt. P. R. Dorsey of the State Motor Patrol conducted an investigation and released Deist on his own recognizance pending further developments. The body of the victim of the accident was turned over to Mortician H. R. Konhaus of Meyersdale, to prepare for burial. Glantzer is survived by his wife, Martha (Valentine) Glantzer, his mother, Mrs. Anna (Wagner) Glantzer, of Cumberland, three brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the home of his mother, Mrs. Anna Glantzer, 11 West 3rd St., South Cumberland, with the pastor of a Cumberland Lutheran Church in charge. Burial in a Cumberland cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, November 15, 1945
