Glessner, D.D., 73, retired minister of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, died Thursday afternoon, April 2, in the Hazel McGilvery Hospital in Meyersdale, following an illness of three years. Rev. Glessner had been retired since October 3, 1934. He had spent 43 years in the service of the Evangelical and Reformed denomination. Since his retirement he had resided in Berlin, Pa. Rev. Glessner was a son of Henry and Lydia (Suder) Glessner and was born in Berlin on July 19, 1868. After receiving his education in the Berlin public schools he matriculated at Juniata Collegiate Institute. He was graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1888 and from the Eastern Theological Seminary in 1891. He was licensed by the Somerset Classis of the Evangelical and Reformed Church on June 7, 1891. Rev. Glessner's first pastorate was the Sulphur Springs charge at Mann's Choice. On May 1, 1893 he was commissioned by the Board of Home Missions of the denomination to serve as missionary of St. Mark's Church, Cumberland, Md., where he supervised the erection of a church. He also organized the Redeemer's congregation in Ellerslie, Md.; St. John's congregation, Corriganville, Md., and the First Reformed Church in Fossilville, Pa. Later Rev. Glessner went to Ohio, where he pioneered in organizing community churches. Rev. Glessner was named president of the Somerset Classis of the Reformed Church in 1896. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of St. Paul's Orphan Home in 1905 and held that office until 1911. Rev. Glessner was associated with William Appel in the merchantile business operated under the firm name Appel & Glessner, in Meyersdale, for a number of years prior to 1911. The deceased held membership in Bedford Lodge No. 329, F. & A.M., the Hebron Royal Arch Chapter, Meyersdale, and the Dayton, O., Consistory. The retired minister was twice married. His first wife was Rosa E. Appel, whom he married in 1895 and whose death occurred in 1919. On June 22, 1926, he and Miss Jennie Brubaker were united in marriage. Surviving are his widow and these children, all born to his first marriage: Mrs. Martha Thornley and Mrs. Miriam Eldridge, both of Youngstown, O., and Mrs. Bertha Shaw, Cleveland, O. He also leaves a granddaughter, Joan Shaw. Rev. Glessner was the last member of his family. Funeral services were conducted at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Funeral Chapel in Berlin by Rev. John Bethune, pastor of the Trinity Reformed Church, assisted by Rev. C. P. Bastian, pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and Rev. D. S. Stephan, former pastor of the Trinity Reformed Church. The remains were taken to Youngstown, O., where funeral services were conducted at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon in the Shriver & Allison Funeral Home. Interment was in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Youngstown. Meyersdale Republican, April 9, 1942
