GLOCK Untimely Death of Swank Hardware Co. President Earl F. Glock Stricken At Age of 53 - Succeeded By His Brother, Robert J. Glock as Head of Co. Earl F. Glock, president of the Swank Hardware Company and one of Johnstown's most prominent businessmen, passed away in Memorial Hospital at 1:13 a.m. last Thanksgiving Day at the untimely age of 53. His death was due to a complication of diseases, but was unexpected, as he had been active and apparently well until a month preceding his demise. He entered the hospital on Oct. 26 - one day before his birthday - and had been under an oxygen tent since admission. Active Career As A Leader His death ended a period of 31 years' association with the Swank Hardware Company and brought to a close an active career as a church and civic club and business leader. Mr. Glock was a deacon of the First Lutheran Church, president of the Johnstown Credit Exchange, and past president of the Johnstown Lions Club, a director of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Cambria Lodge No. 278, F. & A.M.; the Advertising Club and Rifle Club of Johnstown, Sunnehanna Country Club and the Bachelors Club. He was born in Johnstown on Oct. 27, 1890, a son of the late Charles R. Glock, widely known Johnstown businessman, who died in 1924, and of Mrs. Etta (Swank) Glock, who resides in Westmont. Following his graduation from Penn State College in 1912, he became affiliated with the Swank Hardware Company. In 1924 he became general manager and vice president, succeeding his father, and in 1938 was named general manager and president. Devoted Family Man Mr. Glock and the former Claire McNeelis were united in marriage in 1917. In addition to his wife and his mother, he left five children - Charles R. Glock 2nd, Westmont; Cpl. Edward Thomas Glock, with the U.S. Army Engineers at Ft. Belvoir, Va.; Pvt. Earl F. Glock Jr., enrolled in the Army specialized training program at the University of Alabama, and Helen and Alma Claire Glock, both at home. One grandson, John Conrad Glock, also survives. Well Known in Meyersdale Mr. Glock was well known in and a frequent visitor to Meyersdale, owing to the affiliation of the P. J. Cover & Son hardware and furniture store here, which is a branch of Swank's of Johnstown. W. A. Allshouse, manager of the P. J. Cover & Son store and his entire staff, nine in all, went to Johnstown together on Friday evening, preceding the funeral, to show their respect for their revered chief, and to have their last look at his familiar face, as his body lay in state in John Henderson's mortuary where the funeral was held on the following afternoon. As a further mark of respect the Cover store closed at noon, the last Saturday in November, and remained closed until the following Monday morning. Successor Chosen Since President Glock's death, the Swank Hardware Co. has been reorganized by the election of Robert J. Glock, a younger brother of Earl F., as president; Louis A. Wuench as general manager, and Dallas Heim as manager of the furniture department. Mr. Heim was manager of Swank's Meyersdale branch before Mr. Allshouse was named as his successor.
