All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS GLOTFELTY Flavius Josephus Glotfelty Garnered by Grim Reaper At the Age of 84 Funeral services for Flavius Josephus Glotfelty, 84, retired farmer, who died at the home of his son, Elwood, near Bittinger, Jan. 2, were held in the Bittinger Lutheran Church, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 6, after a short service at the Winterberg Funeral Home in Grantsville. Rev. A. C. Curran of Brookville, Pa., a former pastor at Bittinger, officiated, assisted by I. K. Metzler, who spoke of the life of Mr. Glotfelty and his influence in the community. The pallbearers were Clarence Stephens, John Reckner, Ed Buckel, Elmer Shawley, Lawrence Brenneman and Asa Orendorf. His body was laid to rest in the family cemetery on the farm where he spent 51 years of his life. He was the son of the late Nimrod and Magdelina (Broadwater) Glotfelty, born on the Ira Durst farm near Bittinger, and was a grandson of William Glotfelty of Salisbury, Pa. His mother was a daughter of the late Wm. C. Broadwater of Grantsville. In 1887 he married Elizabeth Speicher, who passed away in 1935. Ten children were born to them. Surviving are three sons, Orval, Elwood and Kermit, all living in Garrett County; Mrs. Harrison Wiley, Reisterstown, Md.; Mrs. Samuel Stricker, Finksburg, Md.; Mrs. Nevin Broadwater, Grantsville; one foster daughter, Mrs. Alvin Beachy, Grantsville. He left also 30 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One son, Robert Glotfelty made the supreme sacrifice in World War I. Four grandsons are serving in the armed forces in World War II. The following sisters survive: Mrs. Martha Ferguson, Fairmont, W.Va.; Mrs. Eva Cottrill, Clarksville, W.Va.; Mrs. Ida Friend, Friendsville, Md. Mr. Glotfelty was a lifelong member of the Bittinger Lutheran Church and served on the Church council for many years. He spent his entire life in Garrett County, and was widely known and highly respected. He was kind and generous and an outstanding man in the community. In politics he was a stalwart Republican. Among relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Wiley, Roland, Kathleen and Pvt. Joseph Wiley, Riesterstown; Misses Miriam and Rhea Hetrick, Mr. and Mrs. David Broadwater and Richard Broadwater, Baltimore; Mrs. Samuel Stricker, Finksburg; Mrs. Ida Friend and sons, Paul and Emmet, Friendsville; Mr. and Mrs. Mason Glotfelty and Mrs. Margaret Casteel, Oakland.
