Gnagey, born and reared on a farm adjoining the corporate limits of Grantsville, Md., died at the home of his eldest daughter at Waterloo, Iowa, Oct. 4, 1940, at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 29 days. He was the second son of the late Emanuel and Eliza (Livengood) Gnagey. His ancestry, on both his father's and mother's side, being noted for longevity, probably had much to do with the long span of his life, and with the rugged health he was noted for during almost his entire lifetime. His death was caused by heart disease, from which he suffered but a short time before entering upon his last sleep, and his body was shipped to the community in which he was born and reared, where the funeral service was held at the home of Mrs. C. C. Beachy, one of his daughters, at Grantsville, Md., last Sunday, at ten o'clock a.m. The service was conducted by Rev. Arthur Scrogum, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, at Accident, Md., of which Mr. Gnagey was a member. The burial arrangement was in charge of W. C. Price & Son, morticians, of Meyersdale, Pa., and interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, as Mr. Gnagey had many relatives and friends, not only in his native county and state, but also in Pennsylvania and other states. His wife, who before her marriage was Miss Elizabeth Swauger, of New Germany, Md., preceded him in death some time during the early "nineties". Their surviving children are Cora, wife of George Lininger, of Waterloo, Iowa; Edward, of Washington, Pa.; Annie, wife of Urban Stanton, Bertha, wife of C. C. Beachy, and Mrs. Olive Loechel, all of Grantsville, Md.; Blaine, of Sante Fe, N.M.; Harry, of Warren, Pa.; Elmer, of East Orange, N.J.; Mary, wife of Robert Horne, of Broadhead, Wis.; William, R.D. 1, Meyersdale; Homer of Boynton, Pa.; and Lulu, wife of Harry Parsons, of Baltimore, Md. He is also survived by two sisters, Miss Sarah Gnagey and Mrs. Elizabeth Schrock, of Pasadena, Calif. The early years of Mr. Gnagey's life were spent on his father's farm, but soon after his marriage he farmed on his own account for several years, near Grantsville. He also was in the grocery and confectionery business for some time during his earlier years, and for several years also conducted what was then known as the Farmers' Hotel, but now as the Casselman Hotel. It was during that period that his wife died, and some years later the family located in Salisbury, Md, where he worked at the carpenter trade for some years, and during the latter years of his life he made his home among his children, all of whom attended his funeral, except his son Blaine, of Sante Fe, N.M., and his daughter, Mary, of Broadhead, Wis. Among others at the funeral were many cousins, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives, among whom were the following: W. S. Livengood and Milton Gnagey of Meyersdale, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Keim, P. L. and Joe F. Livengood, of Salisbury, Pa.; Mrs. clyde Broadwater, of Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gnagey, of Ohio.
