He was born at Gortner on March 13, 1893, he was a son of the late Peter and Delphia (Blamble) Gortner. He was a retired automobile dealer for Grantsville Ford and an active member of several area organizations. He was a member of several area organizations. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Red House; Mt. Lodge No 99 AF and AM, Friendsville, Md.; and the Scottish Rite, Ali Ghan Shrine Temple and Royal Arch Chapter No. 26, all located in Cumberland, Md. He was also a member of BPOE Lodge No. 1951, Meyersdale, American Legion Post No. 214, Grantsville, Md; and Knights of Pythias Garrett Lodge No. 114. He was a World War I veteran, and served as Garrett County Commissioner from 1926 to 1930. He was also president of the Grantsville Rotary Club in 1943 and 1944. He is survived by his widow, Flora (Smouse) Gortner, three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Jane Kirk, W.Va.; Mrs. Janet Hochard, Boynton; Mrs. Freda Wagner, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; Mrs. Marie Bucy, Hyndman, RD; Mrs. Jean Miller, Berlin; Carl and Roy, both of Meyersdale RD 4; and Paul, Hyndman RD 1,. He was a member of Kennells Mill Sportsmen's Club. Friends were received at the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, where services were conducted with the Rev. Raymond Mankamyer.
