  John A. "Chief" Gowarty Sr., 71, 937 Boswell Heights, Boswell, died Feb.
  16, 1986, at Somerset Community Hospital.  Born Dec. 21, 1914, in Bedford
  County, son of Michael and Pearl A. (Figard) Gowarty.  Preceded in death by
  parents; wife, former Helen Vesek, who died July 14, 1973; and two infant
  sons.  Survived by these children: John Jr., married to former Mary Lou
  Meyers, Columbia, Pa.; James, married to former Pat Berkey, Kingwood,
  W.Va.; Diane, wife of Robert Horak, Carnegie; Dennis, Pittsburgh; Rose Ann,
  wife of Dennis Covey, San Leandro, Calif.; and Barbara, wife of Donald
  Thomas, Stoystown RD 1; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
  Brother of: Blanche, widow of Chester Dodson, Josephine, widow of Gerald
  Carpenter, both of Stoystown RD 1; Arthur, married to former Jennie Soha,
  Robert, married to former Helen Soha, Kenneth, married to former Nancy
  Donio, all of Jenners.  Member of U.M.W.A. and Jenner Rod and Gun Club.
  Retired employee of Island Creek Coal Co., Tire Hill.  Friends received from
  7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffman Funeral Home, Main
  Street, Boswell, where service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Father
  Alfred Evanoski, O.F.M. Conv.  Interment, St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Boswell.
