Meyersdale lost one its prominent citizens last week with the death of William A. Grasser Sr. Mr. Grasser had long been associated in the minds of Meyersdale's residents with the bake shop located on Center Street, Bill's Sweet Shop formerly known as Twigg's Bakery. William A. Grasser Sr., 81, of Meyersdale died May 16, 1978 in the Meyersdale Community Hospital. He was born Sept. 16, 1896 in Thomasdale, a son of the late John and Ellen (Beaner) Grasser. He was also preceded in death by two wives, Jennie Weimer and Virginia Twigg. He is survived by these children: William A. Jr.; and Betty, wife of Perry Lindeman, both of Meyersdale; Lois, wife of Victor Harris of Berlin; and Mrs. Vera Patton of Oxen Hill, Md.; also 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was a brother of Fred and Mrs. Margaret Thomas, both of Boswell; Joseph and Ed, both of Johnstown; Albert of New Baltimore; Jake of Lancaster; Jim of Thomas Mills; and Mrs. Elizabeth Hopps of Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a past commander of the Charles E. Kelly Post 112, Meyersdale, and a World War I veteran. Friends were received in the Leckemby Funeral Home in Meyersdale. Requiem Mass was held in the St. Phillip and James Catholic Church with the Father Clark George officiating. Interment, church cemetery. Military graveside service were conducted by members of the Charles E. Kelly Post. The Republic, May 25, 1978 [G0901]
